Sun Protection Clothing That’s Stylish

Summer is here with long and hot sunny days.

When you go to the beach you remember to slip, slop and slap.

But what type of clothing are you wearing to protect yourself from the harsh ultraviolet rays?

We discovered this fabulous Melbourne based company, Sha-de a few months ago and have fallen in love with their clothes.

Sha-de is owned by Julia Van Der Sommen who saw a gap in the market for sun protection clothing that also looked stylish.

She wanted a great range of clothes for women to wear from the park, to school pick up, to the holiday house and beach.

Sha-de Resort is a fabulous range of resort clothing for women made from Sha-de’s signature fabric, LuxeBamboo.

This super soft fabric provides high UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) and it’s been rated at UPF50+ by Australia’s leading authority in UV fabric testing, ARPANSA. The breathable fabrics are designed to fit and complement your body shape – to give you fabulous comfort and effortless style, wherever you are.

Each garment in the Sha-de Resort collection gives high UPF with no harmful chemicals, for maximum protection (and comfort) under the sun.

Dog Friendly Beaches

Walking with your four-legged best friend on the beach is fabulous!

Whether you’re visiting the Mornington Peninsula for a day visit or are staying at dog friendly accommodation, you will need to know where you can and can’t walk your dog.

With the summer holidays approaching, there are more restrictions to be aware of.

The Mornington Peninsula Shire has produced a guide to help you work out where you can have the most fun with your dog.

Download the dog friendly beaches guide here.

Here’s our top tips for where we love walking our dog:

  • On leash dog walking permitted from 1st December until the end of February on the Rye and Blairgowrie front beach between 7pm and 10 am.
  • Off leash dog walking permitted all year around from Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron towards Sorrento.
  • If in doubt, check the signage – shire rangers do patrol and often in ‘plain clothes’.
  • Always take a plastic bag to clean up after your dog – failure to clean up results in an on the spot fine of over $100.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Ever seen someone stand up paddle boarding and wanted to try it for yourself?

When you visit the Mornington Peninsula you can!

Peninsula Stand Up Paddle School offers stand up paddle lessons at various locations on the Mornington Peninsula.

Stand up paddle boarding involves standing on a surfboard and paddling yourself around.

Because the surfboards are longer, wider and more buoyant than ‘normal’ surfboards,  you can comfortably balance on them as you propel yourself with the paddle.

Stand up paddle is becoming more popular each year as it’s a great way to keep fit and improve core stability while being outside!

Peninsula Stand Up Paddle School has expert instructors who can tailor a Stand Up Paddle lesson to suit all ages and levels of fitness.

If you’re an experienced Stand Up Paddle Boarder, they can help you improve your technique!

And Peninsula Stand Up Paddle provides boards, paddles, leg ropes and wetsuits.

This fabulous business also runs group classes – perfect if you’re on a girls weekend away or a golfing weekend with your mates.

Arthurs Seat Challenge 2014

Even though we’re in the depths of winter on the Mornington Peninsula, the bursts of sunshine are letting us know that summer is coming!

With the warmer weather just around the corner, you may be thinking about getting fitter and healthier.

And what better way to get off the couch and into the outdoors than to set yourself a fitness challenge.

If you love entering fun runs (that have an option of walking) while helping raise money, the Arthurs Seat Challenge is a perfect event to train for!

This event has been held annually since 2002 and was established to promote the “Fit to Drive Program” –  a road safety program that’s successfully educated young people about safer road use.

And if you start training now, you’ve got until Sunday November 9  to work towards improving your fitness, strength and endurance.

Rye Beach Abode

As you plan towards this event, it’s a perfect time to book 3 nights at Rye Beach Abode.

Picture this:

You’ve pre-ordered your groceries from Woolworths or Coles so we can unpack them and have Rye Beach Abode set up for arrival.

You set off from work on the Friday afternoon, driving only 75-minutes from Melbourne on the Monash Freeway or Eastlink, then onto Peninsula Link.

As you drive up to Rye Beach Abode you smile and give yourself a pat on the back – what a fabulous idea this was!

After you unpack your bags, you walk to Rye front beach. Your muscles feel strong and ready for the Arthurs Seat Challenge.

Any residual work stress melts away as you watch the perfectly formed waves and feel the last of the sunshine on your skin.

You walk back to Rye Beach Abode and get ready to go out for dinner.

Saturday is your day to explore the Mornington Peninsula as you mentally prepare for ‘race day’

Sunday you complete the Arthurs Seat Challenge, enjoy the post-race massage then celebrate back at Rye Beach Abode.
